Halloween Video Game Villains
To really celebrate our game jam and the spooky season, we wanted to compile a list of some of the coolest, scariest video game villains out there!
MWAHAHA! Well good evening, my monstrous coders and scary parents… I hope we’re all feeling ghostly and glad! This week has of course been themed all around Halloween in our clubs, and so was last week, when we started our somewhat spooky game jam, with the theme of DON’T LOOK UNDER THE BED! Of course, our game jam runs until the end of this week too, so you’ve still got time to make your submissions if you want to share a game with all of us here at The Code Zone!
However, to really celebrate our game jam and the spooky season, we wanted to compile a list of some of the coolest, scariest video game villains out there! These are the sorts of creatures you don’t want to find under your bed, that’s for sure, and so it fits perfectly with our theme. And to add an extra bit of fun into the mix, we’ve given them some stats too – which one is your favourite?
- 1. Bowser
We’ll start with the obvious choice of course: BOWSER! This mega-evil mega-spikey reptile king is the leader of the Koopa Kingdom, and he’s been terrorising Princess Peach, Mario and all his friends for a very long time. Through the years, he’s made tons of evil plots to achieve his goals, ranging from merging with magic flowers, sending his army of Koopalings to cause havoc, and even harnessing the power of an entire galaxy!! But he’s always done it in style, which I have to respect. He was recently voiced by the amazing Jack Black in the Mario Movie, who proved that among all his other abilities, Bowser is also quite the singer too!

- 2. Pac-Man Ghosts
Our next villain isn’t just one, but four! Since the early days of gaming, gamers have recognised these four colourful villains as the constant enemies of Pac-Man, and over time they’ve never failed to remain iconic. But what you might not know is that each of the Pac-Man Ghosts has a different name, and even a different set of behaviours! The red ghost is called Blinky, and it’s the most aggressive, chasing Pac-Man directly. The Pink and Blue ghosts are called Pinky and Inky, and they’re the cleverest ones, trying to position themselves in front of where Pac-Man is going. And lastly, we have the orange ghost, called Clyde… he’s a bit brainless, and just moves in random directions the whole game!
Power: 6

- 3. Donkey Kong
Next up we have Donkey Kong! Strangely enough, while many people nowadays might recognise Donkey Kong as a hero, even serving as the main character for his own game, he started off as a villain! That’s right; the first ever game to feature Mario, then only called Jumpman, featured Donkey Kong throwing barrels down towards the italian plumber, as he tried to rescue Pauline, the girl Donkey Kong had taken captive. Nowadays he’s stopped his evil ways, preferring to eat bananas and hang out with his crazy family; but he’s still wicked strong and a very cool Kong!

Intelligence: 3
Evilness: 3
Coolness: 7
- 4. Ganondorf
From the universe of The Legend of Zelda comes our next villain. Ganondorf was the king of the ancient Gerudo people, a civilisation that lives deep in the Gerudo Desert of Hyrule – they’re normally a strong and honourable bunch, but Ganondorf was far from that. You see, he was the reincarnation of ‘Ganon’, a spirit of pure evil that was doomed to return again and again to terrorise the innocent; and the prophecies told that only the Legendary Swordsman Link and the Princess of Hyrule, Zelda, could banish him once more. In one of the most recent Zelda titles, Tears of the Kingdom, Ganondorf returns in a terrifyingly awesome fashion, as the Demon King… but don’t worry, he gets what he deserves in the end!
Power: 8
Intelligence: 7
Evilness: 10
Coolness: 9
- 5. The Wither
Our next villain is a particularly scary one from the world of Minecraft: it’s none other than The Wither! The Wither is a terrifying, three-headed monster made from the skulls of the bone-chilling Wither skeletons and soul sand, a kind of block found in the fiery Nether dimension. It has only one desire – to destroy!! It attacks any animal or player in Minecraft that isn’t already undead, and causes huge explosions as it does so, destroying all the precious landscapes and buildings around it. Thankfully, with a sharpened diamond sword and some tough armour, the players can send it back to the abyss from where it came…
Power: 7
Intelligence: 2
Evilness: 9
Coolness: 6
- 6. Wario
This is probably the stinkiest villain on this list – Wario! This greedy, garlic-munching, good-for-nothing thief is probably the most annoying guy you’ll ever meet – and yet, his bumbling stupidity is somehow still quite charming, and he certainly looks cool on his custom motorbike. That’s why he’s a bit like Donkey Kong, starring as the main character in a selection of games! But don’t be deceived; he may look like he’s doing it out of kindness, but Wario is always in it for the money, garlic, or both. He’s a real rotter, and he literally uses his farts as a weapon, so I certainly wouldn’t want him hiding under my bed. But I suppose in the end, he does manage to help the good guys sometimes, so maybe he’s not all bad.
Power: 6
Intelligence: 4
Evilness: 7
Coolness: 7
- 7. Dr Eggman
Next up we have the iconic villain of the Sonic series, Dr Eggman (real name: Dr Robotnik). This hard boiled maniac is a classic mad scientist, with the wiry moustache to match. He loves nothing more than creating evil inventions like giant robots and lasers, to try and destroy Sonic and his friends. But he’s more than just a nuisance, having tried many times to get his hands on the powerful Chaos Emeralds through whatever tricks he can manage. Thankfully for the rest of the world though, he’s always having his plans foiled. He’s recently been played by the delightfully goofy Jim Carrey in the Sonic the Hedgehog films, who perfectly captures his insane robotic ramblings!
Power: 7
Intelligence: 10
Evilness: 8
Coolness: 6
- 8. Evil Zonebot
In classic The Code Zone fashion, we can’t let this list end without a mention to our favourite villain – the twisted and inverted EVIL ZONEBOT! This strange blue robot has made plenty of appearances in our weekly games, and I’m sure many of our members know just how much of a nuisance it can be – especially when it’s part of a swarm of clones! This little thing has probably been responsible for most of the game-overs our games provide, but thankfully the regular Zonebot is always there to show it who’s boss.
Power: 10
Intelligence: 10
Evilness: 10
Coolness: 10
Code Zone Factor: +100,000
(maybe we’re a little biased…)
And there you have it, eight terrifying villains that we’re hoping you’ll be able to avoid this Halloween – go out there and get coding, and of course, stay spooky!
